3 secret debts you didn't know you have

Proverbs 22:7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the the lender

In this new age of credit, accumulating debts becomes as easy as breathing.

Although very helpful at times of need, borrowing can easily become a trap and hinder us from reaching a certain level of stability. In fact, debts have a way of putting a weigh on one’s shoulder and if not properly managed, they can quite rapidly wear us down.

That is why I have come with this little to reveal three secrets debts that you can easily repay to get by with your life.

Certainly, when we talk about debts, we easily think of money and loans and credit cards. But the bible acknowledges more sources of debt that maybe you never really considered important.

At first, debts are good to enjoy for the satisfaction they bring on the immediate, but I heard a preacher say “owing people is stealing from your future”.

Taking debts is depriving your future self from something that could be much needed at that later time. So, as a person probably seeking for happiness and life fulfillment, I will tell you about 3 secret debts you didn’t know you have, but that you can quickly deal with for you to be able to move forward with a lighter bag.

'Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. ' Romans 13:7-8

Most people know they have to pay taxes and revenue according to what they owe. However, the previous passage states 3 debts that most people are not aware of, and that they are therefor not paying but are accumulating daily. Let's get right to it

1. Respect

Respect is one word many know about, that quite often we apply, however, probably quite a few consider it to be a debt. The previews passage tells us we should respect to anyone it’s due. Respect is not just a privilege that you grant to people. In these modern days, respect has become a source of pride. Many people use quotes such as “you have to own my respect”. But that’s not exactly a Christian-friendly thought, as the bible reveals that we are the one to owe respect and we certainly should give it to whom we owe it to. Therefore, in a first step for you to run debt-free, here are a few specific people that you need to start showing respect to, if you were neglecting that task of yours.

Respect has a value to God and he will reward those who honor this command and those who fall short from it will receive the treatment they deserve.

  • Your parents Leviticus 19:3 “Each of you must respect your mother and father, …” Respecting parents is a way of respecting God, and showing your reverence to him as being the Father of all. God is the one who instituted parental authority and he is the first representor of that hierarchy. We ought to respect our parents because our Lord is God. He is the one to whom we owe the outmost respect. But we cannot see God physically, however our parents we can.

  • Elders Leviticus 19:32 “Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am Lord” We must not wait for people to respect us for us to respect them back, especially not the elders. We must treat ours elders and aged people we respect, because of the lordship of our God. God is the ancient of days, and when he grants some people a long life, we should make sure we honor that and pay them the due respect, as in respect to our God.

  • Your husband (as wives) Ephesians 5:33 “… and the wife must respect her husband” Respect is truly always a matter of honouring God. As wives, the honour due to the husband is mirroring the respect owed to the Father by the church. The husband is the head of The family, just as God is the Head of the Trinity and Jesus the Head of the church. We must then bow to the reverence of our husbands just as we should bow to God’s reverence in respect of his authority.

  • Your Wives (as hubands) 1 Peter 3:7 “Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” If wives must pay respect to their husbands, husbands do not fall short of that command. Husbands too should respect their wife and treat them with the same love as Christ provided the church with, to the point of dying for her. Because of the fragility of women, husbands should take on them to respect and honor their wives, as commends the bible. It’s even more important to respect this command as failing to do so can become a hindrance to one’s prayers.

  • Your boss Ephesians 6:5 “Slaves obey your earthly masters with respect and fear…” Surely, times of slavery are long gone and we never want them back, ever. However, as employee, our bosses make office of earthly master over us and we ought to work for them with uttermost respect, as working for the Lord. Surely, wherever we step foot as Christians to engage in any type of work, we are representing the kingdom of God, and must honor that mandate.

  • To Everyone 1 Peter 2:17 “Show proprer respect to everyone…” It’s true that some people deserve some special respect in regards to their position. However, that does not mean that some other people must be deprived of respect. Actually, we must show respect to anyone as creature of God. Therefore, let us not refrain ourselves or grow into pride and let us obey to this command of respect towards everyone, so that we can walk debt-free.

2. Honor

Once we have dealt of the first debt of respect, honor is the second one to give back in order to lessen our debt load. Honor means “high respect, great esteem”, “adherence to what is right or to a conventional standard of conduct.” Above respect previously mentioned, there’s an even more greater form of respect called honor. Let us look to a few cases to who we need to give back this honor.

  • God 1 Corinthians 6:20 “…Therefore, honor God with your bodies” We must honor God, and not in any way but with our bodies. Our bodies are the temple of God, and honoring him with our bodies means recognizing how privileged we have, having been chosen as a house for our Lord, since he has decided to dwell in us through his Holy Spirit. We must then treat our bodies with great respect, high esteem and honor.

  • The Emperor 1 Peter 2:17 “…fear God, honor the Emperor” The emperor was the highest political authority at the times where this epistle was written. Although being under the authority of God, we must not disobey our human instituted authorities, but we must pay them the honor that is due, only making sure that this doesn’t competes with our own reverence to God. As Jesus said, let us give Cesar what it Cesar’s.

  • Your Father and Mother '“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— ' Ephesians 6:2 ! ' “ honor your father and mother,’ ...” Matthew 19:19 Respecting our parents is not enough. We must honor them. We must treat them with uttermost respect, for, obedience to this command will lead to reaping the result of a promise of long life.

  • The prophets 'Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” ' Mark 6:4 At the times of Jesus, it was very clear that there was a form of respect that needed to be paid to the prophets. However, in these time and ages, many people don’t even believe in the prophetic ministry, and fail to respond to this command. We must be very aware that God has always worked with prophets, and cherish his prophets very much. Let us then honor their lives, for there is a reward attached to whoever receives and treats a prophet in his quality of prophet.

3. Love

'Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. ' Romans 13:8

The debt of love is the last one we should be quick to repay. However, love is a debt that can never be repaid for the bible says that we need to be continuously repaying this debt. They debt of love has been placed as a yoke on our necks, and we need to make sure that we walk in it daily. Although it is an eternal debt, it doesn’t mean that we should neglect repaying it. On the contrary, every day, we should walk in love, so that in the last days, we will not have fallen short of the quantity of love we were expected to repay. The debt of love must never remain outstanding for it is with love that we can be able to accomplish the law. The one who lacks love has failed even though he respects any other commandments.

When talking about debts, we should not only focus on money, but make sure that what is even more important than money, we deal with.

I hope this short article has made you realise how much we can forget about the important things and debts we have to repay, and be so focused on money that is temporary.

Start paying your debts now: Respect, Honor, Love!

Until next time,
